La Muda

More than a name, the ancestral Pasiego spirit defining our bikepacking adventure in Cantabria.

Origin

The soul of our adventure

To understand “La Muda” is to understand the heart of the Valles Pasiegos. It’s not just a word; it’s an ancestral tradition, a way of life marked by the rhythm of nature and the need to adapt to an environment as beautiful as it is demanding. It is the essence that inspires our adventure.

For centuries, Pasiego families practiced ‘la muda’: a seasonal movement, a vertical migration with all their livestock and belongings, ascending to the high pastures (‘brañas’) in search of fresh grass in summer and descending to lower shelters in winter. It was an exercise in self-sufficiency, resilience, and deep connection with the land.

Our bikepacking route honours and reinterprets this spirit. Like the Pasiegos, you will face the terrain carrying the essentials, relying on your own strength and planning. You will pedal through the very landscapes shaped by ‘la muda’, discovering its vestiges on forgotten trails and centuries-old cabins. You won’t just travel through a territory; you will experience the echo of its history.

Understanding ‘La Muda’ transforms your journey from a mere sporting challenge into a unique cultural and personal experience. It connects you with the roots of Cantabria and invites reflection on adaptation, sustainability, and what is truly essential. Embark on your own ‘Muda’ and discover it!
